Queen Mary and King Frederik X’s special message to nephew after royal title saga

Queen Mary and King Frederik have penned a personal message to their nephew, Count Nikolai, in honour of his 25th birthday.
The Danish monarchs took to their official Instagram page to post two unofficial royal photos and to share their celebratory message: “His Excellency Count Nikolai has a birthday and is turning 25 today 🇩🇰
“In the first picture @nikolaitildanmark is seen climbing the mountain Roys Peak in New Zealand, and in the second picture the Count is seen with the family at Château de Cayx in France,” the post concluded.

Queen Mary and King Frederik’s message follows the royal title saga that has plagued Count Nikolai since his grandmother, Queen Margrethe II, announced that he and his three younger siblings would no longer be able to use their prince and princess titles.
It also led to speculation about strained relations between Queen Margrethe’s two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and his younger brother, and their families.

Acknowledging Count Nikolai’s birthday is a step towards dispelling these accusations of a family dispute.
Queen Mary and King Frederik’s four children could keep their royal title; at the time, Queen Margrethe said the decision had good intentions.
The former Danish monarch wanted Count Nikolai’s family to be “able to shape their own lives to a much greater extent without being limited by” their royal titles.
The monarch later apologised for causing her family any distress, admitting she “underestimated” how much they would “feel affected” after Prince Joachim, Princess Marie, and Count Nikolai expressed their hurt and surprise to Danish media.

Speaking with 9honey last year, Nikolai opened up about how his grandmother’s decision impacted him.
“It’s still quite a touchy subject, but, I mean, I am the same person as I’ve always been,” he said.
“It’s more just a formality or sort of change of belonging, in a way.”
Admitting it’s “hard to describe, especially in English”, Nikolai said: “I am the same person I have always been; it’s weird having to settle for another surname now.
“Or another… not surname, another a call sign.”
When asked if Nikolai was offended by his grandmother’s decision, he replied: “Oh, I wouldn’t say hurt, and it’s not my intention to stir the pot in any way. I think it’s just a bit weird still, I still have to get used to it.”
